If you love architecture, great views, and lakefront city vibes, then Madison, Wisconsin, deserves a spot on your radar. We spent a long weekend immersed in the legacy of Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s most iconic architect, while enjoying everything Madison has to offer, from amazing food to live music and scenic strolls.

We followed the Wright in Madison Trail, using their handy app to check in at key sites, learn about Wright’s work, and earn fun prizes along the way. (Yes, you can get free prizes just for exploring!) Here is the link to sign up:
Here are some ideas to plan your own Wright-inspired Madison trip!
Frank Lloyd Wright Must-Visits
Monona Terrace - We were blown away by the amazing lakefront and State Capitol views of this building! Originally designed in 1938 by Wright, Monona Terrace was opened in 1997 and is an absolute hidden gem. The terrace itself is well-planned with a ton of beautiful plants and plenty of seating!

First Unitarian Society Meeting House - We took a tour of this amazingly crafted church and learned so much about Wright’s design philosophy and his belief system.

Taliesin - Located ~1 hour away from Madison, Taliesin served as Wright’s personal home, studio, and school. We went on the highlights tour, which covered a lot of the estate, and we learned so much in the 2 hours. It is just so interesting to sit where Wright sat, walk through his property, and hear about the history of Taliesin. Make sure to reserve a tour in advance!

Can’t Miss Activities in Madison
Dane County Farmer’s Market - An extensive local market with a ton of fresh produce, flowers, and baked goods. We always get the famous cheese bread when we come here.
Wisconsin State Capitol - We took a self-guided tour of this iconic building and especially loved the museum on the sixth floor and the observation deck that has incredible city views.

Local Events - There are always many local events going on in Madison, so you definitely need to be on the lookout when you plan your visit! We were fortunate to attend the Art Fair on the Square and La Fête de Marquette during our trip, which were a ton of fun.
State Street - We enjoyed walking along State Street on our way to the UW Campus, which is lined with really cute shops and great restaurants.
Memorial Union Terrace - We caught the sunset at the terrace while enjoying ice cream from the Daily Scoop, a Spotted Cow from the bar, and live music. If you’re in Madison, this really is an iconic activity!

Olbrich Botanical Gardens - We ALWAYS love coming here! It is free to enjoy the outside gardens, and it is absolutely worth making the trip to marvel at all the beautiful plants, fountains, and flowers! You also can’t miss the stunning Thai Pavilion!

Where to Eat
Marigold Kitchen - This HAS to be your breakfast/brunch spot while downtown. We were blown away by how delicious the food is here. Don’t worry if there is a line out the door (there probably will be). It goes super fast!
Ha Long Bay - Newly renovated Southeast Asian restaurant with fantastic and authentic food! You can tell Ha Long Bay is a local favorite.
Tipsy Cow - Great location right next to the State Capitol building, serving tasty tavern food.
