Boise isn’t just Idaho’s capital; it’s one of the most underrated destinations in the USA. Tucked in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, this capital city blends outdoor adventure with art, history, and an incredible food scene. Within a few days, we went from sipping wine along the river to hiking panoramic trails, exploring historic sites, and eating some of the best Basque food we’ve ever had.
Here are 5 reasons Boise needs to be on your travel list!
1. The Outdoors Are Built Into the City

In Boise, nature isn’t something you drive to; it’s part of daily life! The Table Rock Trail gives you sweeping views of the entire valley after just a moderate climb. The Idaho Botanical Garden is a lush, art-filled oasis perfect for a morning stroll. And then there’s the Boise River Greenbelt, 25 miles of tree-lined paths right through the city, perfect for biking, walking, or stopping at a winery (Telaya and Laissez Faire are great) on the way.
2. The Diverse Food Scene Will Blow You Away

Boise definitely serves up big flavors. Start your morning with saffron pastries at Sunshine Spice Cafe (Boise’s first Afghan bakery and cafe), grab brunch at BACON, and later dive into hearty Basque classics at Bar Gernika in the Basque Block. Dinner could mean handmade pasta at Alavita or elevated comfort food at Percy. And don’t skip dessert at Dee’s Ice Cream Trolley, ice cream served out of a historic streetcar! I recommend signing up for the Boise International Cuisine Trail, where you can discover over 40 participating international restaurants.
3. History Comes Alive in Unexpected Ways
Boise wears its history proudly, and it’s fascinating. At the Old Idaho Penitentiary, you’ll walk through cell blocks and hear stories that feel straight out of a movie. On our Preservation Idaho Walking Tour of downtown Boise, our guide Amy brought the city’s architecture to life with stories about the people who built it. It’s the kind of history that sticks with you long after you’ve left.
4. Arts & Culture Around Every Corner

Creativity runs deep in Boise. Freak Alley Gallery is one of the largest open-air galleries in the Northwest…colorful, bold, and constantly changing. In the summer, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival transforms the foothills into a stage, letting you watch world-class performances under the stars.
5. Small-City Charm, Big-City Energy
Boise has that sweet spot of being big enough to keep you entertained but small enough to feel welcoming. Neighborhoods like Hyde Park are filled with boutiques, cafés, and a local vibe you won’t find anywhere else. Staying at the Inn at 500 put us in the heart of it all, offering boutique comfort with complimentary bikes for exploring. Everywhere we went, people were friendly, proud of their city, and eager to share it.

Final Thoughts
Boise is one of those places that sneaks up on you. It’s not flashy, but it’s full of heart, flavor, and adventure. From riverside trails and glowing gardens to Basque eats and outdoor theatre, Boise has a way of making you feel like you’ve uncovered something special.
